Our History
BDO's growth continues
The history of BDO in New Zealand goes back to the 1930s, through our predecessor Firms, all with a variety of interesting names. The first real date for "BDO" was 1975.
-
1935: C.S. Hogg & Co was founded in Wellington by Mr C.S. Hogg, with branch offices opened in Auckland (1967) and Christchurch (1970), Hamilton (1978).

1967: C.S. Hogg & Co became Hogg Young Cathie & in 1975 the Firm became the New Zealand representatives of Binder Seidman International

Early 1980s: Binder changed to Binder Djike Otte or BDO and the New Zealand Firm became Hogg Young Cathie BDO

1980s: The Firm slowly transitioned from Hogg Young Cathie BDO to BDO Hogg Young Cathie until 2001's merger

1997: The Firm changed to be a national association of Independent Member Firms (IMFs) rather than one national practice.

2001: BDO Spicers came together through the merger of two accounting firms BDO and Spicer & Oppenheim. Each of these Firms had a strong presence in their market through predecessor firms including Hogg Young Cathie and Spicer & Oppenheim.

2001-2007: BDO Spicers grew significantly from the merger until June of 2007 when our growth accelerated, in line with our ongoing goal to always maintain the position of 5th largest accounting firm in New Zealand.

June 2007: BDO Spicers' Wellington office announced a merger with the Wellington office of Horwath, growing the Wellington Firm to over 80 staff including 12 directors.

July 2007: BDO Spicers announced that a new Firm in Tauranga was to join the national network, bringing our total staff to over 400 with more than 55 Partners.

October 2007: BDO Spicers announced 4 new Member Firms had joined our national network. We now have 65 Partners and over 650 staff across New Zealand.

January 2008: BDO Spicers Christchurch brings on a new Partner, Brent Bartram

April 2008: BDO Spicers Hawkes Bay merges with local Firm Nesbitt Scott & Williams to bring on 1 new Partner. BDO Spicers Wellington also brings on a new Partner, Michael Rania and BDO Spicers Gisborne welcomes Glenn Morley to the Partnership. Our National Partner number is now 66

July 2009: BDO Spicers Christchurch welcomes Martin Veitch and Darren Evans to their Partnership

1 October 2009: BDO Spicers becomes just BDO. As part of changes to our international newtwork, we have moved to "One name". From this day we are BDO in all countries across the world.
